Can you believe tomorrow is 50 days to Election Day? The weeks are flying by, and we have no plans to slow down any time soon. Whether it's making new friends at the doors every day or broadcasting our new television commercials, our team is working diligently to reach out to you.
It's no secret that our district is one of the largest in the country -- comprising about 25% of our entire state -- but I always do my best to stay connected to all corners of our communities, and even though I'm now missing my usual travel buddy, my son Nicolás (he's so grown up, I almost forgot he had to go back to school), this month was no different.
I spent time in El Paso, where I was incredibly grateful to local veterans who joined me for a roundtable discussion about their concerns and priorities. It's important to me that these lines of communication are always open, because many times the best ideas come from everyday people on the front lines of the issues we are working on, and not from policy or legislative "experts" in Washington, D.C.
We made our way across the district and rounded out the month celebrating Labor Day in San Antonio -- honoring the role that working Americans have played in transforming our nation into a global economic powerhouse. I proudly stood and marched alongside hardworking families on the 50th Anniversary of the Starr County Farmworker Strike. Few Texans know the story of the Mexican-American farmworkers who, 50 years ago this summer, marched on our State Capitol to demand a higher minimum wage (they were asking for a mere $1.25 per hour) and better working conditions. We've come a long way since then, but much remains to be done.
As we continue to ramp up and grow our campaign during these final 50 days of the election, consider joining our team as a volunteer. No matter where you might live, there are plenty of convenient and fun opportunities to make a difference in this race. Our volunteers are the backbone of our team, and -- as one of the most competitive races in the entire country -- your efforts will be the deciding factor between a win or a loss. Sign up to volunteer and join our team here.
Your continued support and enthusiasm for our journey to November 8th means a lot to me -- it is a real privilege to have you on our team.
Labor Day 2016
We hope everyone enjoyed a restful Labor Day with family and friends! From attending a Mass at San Fernando Cathedral to marching alongside community and labor leaders, and many other supporters, in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Starr County Farmworker Strike, Team Gallego's Labor Day 2016 was one for the books!
We ran into Delma, a longtime Pete supporter, in Del Rio this month. She and her grandson first met Pete many years back when he was running for state representative, and they've stuck with him ever since. When it came time for her grandson to graduate high school, Pete was there to present his class with their diplomas. Delma keeps a picture of the first time her grandson met Pete to remind her of this special memory. Thanks, Delma!
Potluck for Pete!
Thank you to the hundreds of folks who joined us for our district-wide Potluck for Pete! We had such a blast seeing old friends and making new ones!
Marfa Lights Festival Parade!
Pete and Team Gallego had loads of fun at the 30th Annual Marfa Lights Festival Parade! It was exciting to see, hear and feel the enthusiasm and respect for Pete across the whole community. Special thanks to Pete's parade motorcade -- it was a big hit!
American Postal Workers Union
The American Postal Workers Union has long been a champion for hundreds of thousands of USPS clerks, maintenance employees, motor vehicle service workers, and working families across our district and our country. I always enjoy visiting with the San Antonio Alamo Area Local Chapter, and I'm incredibly proud to have their endorsement.
Show Your #PetePride!
We have a new batch of yard signs coming in fast, so (before they run out again) make sure to reserve yours today! Request a yard sign to tell your neighbors you're supporting Pete here.
Voices of Texas Video Contest
Voices of Texas is doing great work to engage our youth in the electoral process! All students should take advantage of this contest -- shoot a quick video about the importance of voting, and you could win a hefty scholarship! Check out their website for more details.
Local University of Texas at El Paso student Michelle Esparza painted this amazing mural capturing Pete's life. Her work is incredible -- we know she has a real future as an artist. Stop by our El Paso office to see the details of her work. Thank you, Michelle!
