There’s an unquestionable connection between access to education and a better future. Education opened the door to opportunity in my life, which is why I believe all Texans should have an opportunity at a better education, and a better future. In the state legislature, I fought attempts to cut $5.4 billion from public education. We must make a national commitment to our children by improving our schools, reducing class sizes, ensuring that we have the best trained, most qualified teachers in the world and putting in place the means for students to attain a higher education. In Co…
We owe a great debt to the men and women who defend and have defended our country, which means we must make sure that we are supporting local military families and veterans. We need to guarantee that they will receive prompt and high-quality care at VA clinics, and we need to increase funding for programs that provide aid for wounded veterans, and support programs that help these men and women find jobs once they get home. As the son of a World War II veteran, I take these issues very personally, and as a former member of the House Armed Services committee, I am proud of my re…
Our country is made up of immigrants who made the journey to the United States in search of the American dream, but Donald Trump has declared war on immigrants. I strongly support comprehensive immigration reform. Sadly, due to a failure of leadership in Washington, our immigration system is broken. However, bashing immigrants doesn't make our country safer. Our immigration system must: Ramp up efforts to improve border security to keep criminals out of our country; Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in this country who pay a fine, pay…
The Dream Act would allow young people who were brought to this country as children, graduated from high school and stayed out of trouble, to earn a path to citizenship through military service or by going to college. I strongly support this legislation. I was proud to vote for the Texas DREAM Act, I have been proud to know and employ DREAMers, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to support the DREAM Act in the future. Diversity is our strength. We must continue to create legal pathways to citizenship for people willing to work hard, give back to their communit…
Medicare and Medicaid
I strongly support expanding Medicaid in Texas, which will immediately provide 1 million hard-working, low-income, uninsured Texas families with health care coverage. Expanding Medicaid also makes sure Texas taxpayers help people in Texas, rather than sending their federal taxes to Washington, D.C. I understand that Medicare is what keeps many seniors from falling into poverty, which is why I have always opposed efforts to cut Medicare or turn it into a voucher program. Instead, I support efforts to reduce waste and fraud and to lower prescription drug costs, which will save billions …
There are some parts of this district that, even today, do not have access to running water or proper sewage services. I have worked to provide 171 families with running water for the first time and will continue to help people, regardless of where they live, access services that most of us take for granted. Creating and maintaining better infrastructure is good for the district, and will allow us to attract and create more jobs right here at home.
The oil and gas industry in the 23rd District is a big reason why the United States has become a net exporter of crude oil for the first time since the 1950s. Making the most of our domestic fossil fuel resources not only creates good paying jobs, but also moves us towards energy independence. And while we must do the most with the resources we’ve been given, we must also be good stewards of our future and develop green energy to grow the energy-sector jobs of tomorrow. It is our responsibility to develop the energy sources of the future today; that’s good economic policy, …
Social Security is a lifeline for many, and allows our seniors to retire with dignity; in fact, half of America's seniors would fall below the poverty line without it. I have pledged to protect our seniors by protecting the Social Security benefits that they have earned, now and in the future. I would oppose efforts to raise the retirement age, to slash benefits, or to privatize it. I believe we must strengthen Social Security and make it easier for Americans to save for their retirement through automatic enrollment in retirement programs at their workplaces. Seniors shouldn't be…
Our nation is at a turning point when it comes to health care. The decisions we make will impact generations to come. It is critical that we make sure, as we work to improve our system, that we do it openly and receive honest and informed feedback from the people most affected by the proposed changes. The bill that Washington Republicans are proposing is extremely flawed and, importantly, the process to pass it has been anything but transparent. The process on legislation as impactful as this needs to be public and accessible so lawmakers and voters alike can debate and as…
During my time in the Texas Legislature and in Congress, I was relentlessly focused on reigniting the American Dream by focusing on what works to create good jobs and making our economy stronger — small businesses, entrepreneurs, and an inclusive and thriving middle class. I will continue to be a strong proponent for small businesses- the engines of economic growth in our communities. I will fight to keep existing jobs and attract new ones to Texas. I will also encourage companies to keep jobs here at home, by closing tax loopholes for corporations that ship American jobs oversea…
