This program offers grants that are awarded to applicants that demonstrate improving student achievement and attainment to expand the implementation of, investment in, and innovative practices that pertain to the following:

2010 Census

AUSTIN - 2010 is a census year and Representative Pete Gallego urges everyone to participate in the census. "Every ten years our government takes a count of everyone living in the country to help appropriate money efficiently" Gallego said. It helps decide where the government sends over $400 Billion.

Del Rio Hospital Under New Management

Val Verde Regional Medical Center is under new management after their contract with Community Hospital Corp ended. Methodist Healthcare based out of San Antonio has taken over most administrative and management responsibilities for the Del Rio hospital. Rep. Gallego Honored by Region 18

ODESSA - State Rep. Pete P. Gallego, D-Alpine has been named the 2009 Advocate of the Year for Education Service Center Region 18. Gallego was cited for his tireless efforts to improve opportunities for and increased state funding of gifted and talented programs, the center said.

Chairman Gallego holds Criminal Jurisprudence hearing

The House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence held its first hearing to discuss appropriate procedures for presenting scientific evidence during the trial of criminal cases. The committee only heard invited testimony from a range of people, some to speak were, Professor Wellborn, Sam Bassett former chair of the Forensic Science Commission, and new Chairman John Bradley. The hearing was not one of the interim charges issued by the Speaker, but an important issue in the state that falls in the committee's jurisdiction. Rep. Donation Account Set Up for Maqueta Allen

Representative Gallego sends his best to Marqueta Allen who lost her home to a fire that destroyed everything. Thankfully no one seriously injured, two of her sons though received second degree burns. "It devastating these things happen, I'm happy that we didn't lose anyone" Gallego said. A 40 bed unit, called the Bachelors Quarters Unit, was opened to help house relief officers coming from El Paso. The city of Fort Stockton was operating at 50-55% on top of a housing shortages to house the the relief officers. State Representative Pete P. Colonia Construction Grants Awarded to District 74

AUSTIN, TX- This week the Department of Rural Affairs awarded Colonia Construction Fund Grants to counties in District 74 totaling more than $900,000.

The grants are as follows: 
$454,000 to Brewster County for construction in Study Butte and Terlingua colonia areas.  Contractors will provide first-time sewer service to 50 households and will install 2 septic tanks in accordance with the sewer service.
