Today, March 2, marks the 174th year since Texas' Independence. On this day in 1836, fifty-nine folks signed the Declaration of Independence for the Republic of Texas. The signing came a year after the first battle of the Texas Revolution and shortly before the decisive battle of San Jacinto. The victorious San Jacinto Battle on April 21, 1836 gave Texas independence for about a decade, a ten year period that still shapes the people of this state today. "The folks of Texas are the only one's that I know of that mention their home state with such pride and honor." Representative Gallego said "My family and I are proud that we are Texans too."
